Scarlet Canary Confirm They Don't Suck With Perspective

After watching the video for Scarlet Canary's new single, "Antidote", I knew this was going to be an album worth checking out. You can read my thoughts on that song here.  After a good bit of time with the new album Perspective, I can in fact walk away with the safe proclamation that this band does not suck. Below I will chronicle the reasons you should probably head to your nearest keyboard (computer, not instrumental), and order this CD.

As I covered in my review of the first single, the band has a bit of a throwback metal / hard rock feel. Hannah Maddox delivers mightily on vocals. She starts off gently with clean vocals and wails on the opening track "I'll Be Ok". Comparisons to Iron Maiden's vocalist Bruce Dickinson might be met with angry Maiden fans crying sacrilege,  but i'm making the comparison anyway because it's the first thing that came to my mind when listening, and I don't think it's a stretch. By the time you get to the third song, "Spectral", you'll be convinced she's not human. (I still don't have confirmation of this, but she seems like a lovely being, demon-born or otherwise.) The screams on the latter half of this song are completely impressive, as they are throughout the CD, and they aren't assisted. What you hear is all Hannah on vocals.

While the vocals are completely outstanding, and undoubtedly will garner a lot of attention, we have to
talk about the job they did on instrumentals as well. The guitar and drum sections add a lot to these songs and don't just serve as meaningless background music. There are sections where the drum beats and guitar riffs literally pick the song up and carry it forward with a barrage of intensity.

You'll probably know within one track if Scarlet Canary is your cup of tea. The good news is that if you are on board there are six tracks of excellent quality waiting for you. The tracks all have enough variety to make repeat listens a must. My favorite track would definitely be song five, "Armor". There's just something about the mix of clean vocals and screams combined with the excellent chorus that propels that song to the top for me. You can't really go wrong with any of them however and I wouldn't be surprised to see people's favorite's divided among the six tracks.

To sum it all up, Scarlet Canary do not in fact suck and are actually quite the talented bunch. Even after a ton of plays for review i'll probably go back to this one soon for a listen. Highly recommended. Catch up with Scarlet Canary on Facebook and Twitter and make sure to go to their website and order this cd.
